(1) The district court is authorized to appoint one or more district court commissioners, subject to appropriation of necessary funds pursuant to chapter 4.26 SCC. District court commissioners may be located in any electoral district as determined by the presiding judge.

(2) A district court commissioner who is employed for twenty hours per week or more is eligible for employee benefits as described in chapter 3A.06 SCC, except that a district court commissioner shall accrue and use leave with pay, including sick leave, in the same manner as a district court judge.
